What is Travel Disruption?

Travel disruption is an optional extra that can be added to Multitrip Travel Insurance for an additional premium. It tops up the cover over & above the regular policy in the event of cancellation, delay & missed departure, holiday abandonment and accommodation due to strikes, severe weather, natural disasters, disease outbreaks and other circumstances for costs and expenses that are not recoverable from any other source.

Always make sure you have appropriate travel insurance in place. Although regular travel insurance covers cancellation and curtailment, it does not provide cover in the event of the emergency situations listed above. The cover is extended to include these when you add extra travel disruption.

Travel Disruption is available as an add-on on Multitrip Travel Insurance policies from as little as €17 per person.

You can add Travel Disruption to your policy by paying an additional premium either at the time of purchase or later you can upgrade your policy in the Policy Login area, or call our customer service team. Please note, however, that it will take 7 days to be effective and does not cover for anything existing or being publicly announced at the time of purchase/add on. Travel Disruption is unavailable for trips departing/booked within 7 days.

You must check if your destination is considered safe to travel to before departing and even before buying travel insurance as you will only have cover providing there was no restriction in place on that area prior to purchasing. Official sources are:

What does Travel Disruption Insurance cover?

With Travel Disruption, you are allowed to claim back compensation for:

Extended Cancellation or Curtailment

This provides cover for irrecoverable charges due to Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFA) or World Health Organization (WHO) specific advice against travelling to a particular country or region.

Extended Delayed Departure & Holiday Abandonment

Covers additional accommodation and travel expenses OR irrecoverable unused costs due to flight being cancelled or delayed for more than 12 hours, or a person being involuntarily denied boarding.

Missed Departure

Covers additional accommodation and travel expenses incurred in reaching overseas destination or returning home due to failure of other scheduled public transport, strike or industrial action or adverse weather conditions.

Accommodation Cover

Covers irrecoverable unused costs of booked or additional accommodation and transport costs if one cannot avail of it on arrival or at any time during the trip and needs to be moved elsewhere or curtail the trip.
