Research from Multitrip.com shows 38% of Irish holidaymakers have started choosing coolcations, selecting destinations where they’re unlikely to face extreme heat.

The figure is contained in an Opinium* survey of 1,000 people commissioned by Multitrip.com which looks at how people are determined to book holidays that suit their needs.

It also shows:

  • 58% of people see holidays as a top priority and one of the last things they would cut back on.
  • 63% of people are cutting back on other spending to ensure they can go on holiday.
  • 70% of people are aiming to travel at off-peak times this year to keep costs down.
  • 29% would consider a ‘wonky weekend’- style break, like travelling from a Saturday to a Tuesday, to save costs.

Worryingly it shows that while 45% consider booking early to get a good price, only 26% of customers make sure they have travel insurance in place as soon as they book a holiday.

Jason Whelan MD at Multitrip.com  said: "Our research suggests many holidaymakers are looking for trips that offer better value and greater comfort, with cooler destinations and off-peak travel becoming more appealing. "

No matter where people choose to holiday, we urge all holiday makers to purchase a policy as soon as they book their trip, to ensure their holidays are protected for cancellation cover.

It’s worth remembering the cost of travel insurance doesn’t get any cheaper if you leave it to the last minute, so there’s really no benefit to delaying, in fact you are missing out on essential protection. Travel insurance is too important to be an afterthought.”
