New research from specialist travel insurance provider Multitrip.com reveals that UK holidaymakers are embracing a wide range of trips, from solo breaks and wellness retreats, to nature and adventure holidays, alongside more traditional holidays.
The Opinium survey of 1,016 UK holidaymakers¹ reveals that six in ten (60%) of those who travel abroad at least once a year have taken a solo holiday. This rises to 73% among Gen Z, compared to 43% of Baby Boomers.
Holidaymakers are also opting for experience-led trips. Almost half (48%) have taken a wellness holiday abroad, such as yoga or mindfulness retreats, while 63% have chosen nature or adventure holidays, including hiking or wildlife trips.
Winter sports remain a firm favourite, with 46% having been on a skiing or snowboarding holiday abroad.
Traditional holidays still dominate
Despite the rise in newer travel trends, traditional holidays remain a core part of UK travel habits. More than nine in ten UK holidaymakers say they have travelled in Europe (98%), been on a beach holiday abroad (92%), taken a city break (91%), or enjoyed a staycation in the UK (91%).
Further afield, 83% have taken a long-haul trip outside Europe and the USA, while 74% have visited the USA.
Buy travel insurance as soon as you book
As planning for summer holidays gets underway, Multitrip.com is reminding travellers to secure travel insurance as soon as they book their trip.
Its internal data reveals that more than half (53%)2 of those who buy single trip travel insurance policies do so less than seven days before departure, leaving themselves exposed if something goes wrong before they travel3. This is especially risky given that over a quarter (28%)4 of Multitrip.com’s travel insurance claims are for holiday cancellations.
Christian Bennett at Multitrip.com, said: “From solo escapes to wellness and activity breaks, the holidays people are taking are more varied and experience-driven than ever, and accidents can happen. Making sure you have the right insurance in place as soon as you book your holiday allows you to look forward to your well-earned break, and as switch off while you are away. We offer a range of policy types and optional add-ons to suit holidaymakers’ travel needs.”
Multitrip.com offers a range of policies to suit different needs and budgets. Annual European travel insurance policies start from £19.995. Annual Worldwide (including USA/Canada) travel insurance start from £44.686. Prices exclude a £3.95 handling fee. To get a quote, visit www.multitrip.com.
