Whatever we may think of low-cost airlines, one good thing about it is that it has made us think about whether we really need an extra large suitcase for a week’s holiday. The thoughts of packing can really take the edge off your sense of excitement but it really doesn’t have to be a stress-inducing experience.
Follow our 10 steps to lighter packing to take the stress out of holiday packing;
1. Make a Checklist
Making a packing list forces you to decide what’s really necessary and what’s not. Write down exactly what you will need, taking into account the climate of your holiday destination. Review your list once completed and cross off anything you can do without.
2. Take the right luggage
Look for a suitcase or bag that is lightweight when it is empty. You will be able to carry more than you would be able to in a heavy suitcase.
3. Plan your wardrobe
Packing coordinating items allows you to save on space, leaving clothes that don’t match at home. Plan your wardrobe so that everything matches with everything else.
4. Roll your clothes
This makes maximum use of the space in your bag and helps clothes to stay wrinkle free.
Books are heavy and their weight will add up very quickly. It might be best to leave the hard backs at home to read on your return or consider an e-book
6. Buy travel-sized toiletries
Wherever possible, buy travel-sized toiletries. Shampoo, shower gel, toothpaste and sun cream are all available in mini bottles and take up less space than full-sized bottles. You can use the contents on holidays and discard of the bottles making your luggage even lighter for the return journey – extra room for souvenirs!
7. Plan in advance
Find out ahead of time whether bulky items like towels and a hairdryer will be provided at your destination, no need to double up on these.
There are so many items that couples or friends bring on a trip that become redundant. For example, you may only need one bottle of shampoo and one tube of toothpaste. To ensure that you aren’t duplicating items unnecessarily, create your packing checklists together and decide on items that you can share. Doing something as little as bringing just one charger can free up extra space in your bags.
9. Wear your bulky items on the plane
You can easily save room in your bags by wearing your heaviest and bulkiest items on the plane such as your coat, walking boots or runners. This will free up room in your bag so you will have a little extra room for something else.
Take a good look at the contents of your suitcase next time you are unpacking after a holiday. Make a note of everything you did not use or need. If you realise you forgot to take something important, make a note of that too. Leave this list inside your suitcase to help with your packing for your next holiday.
